Bravery and Strength Amid a Teenager’s Life-Changing Diagnosis | Zoe’s Story

Posted Date: 12/05/2023
At just 17 years old, Zoe was diagnosed with cancer. After experiencing some pelvic pain in early June, she knew she needed to get answers. After several tests, ultrasounds, and a biopsy, on June 16th, she was told that she had germ cell cancer in her ovaries.

Zoe is from Keyser, West Virginia. When she was diagnosed, her mom, Holly, researched hospitals all throughout the region to treat her daughter. Ultimately, they decided to come to Mon Health Medical Center to be treated by Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. William McBee.

“We had no clue what to expect in any part of this. We weren’t sure about the treatments or timeframe or recovery,” said Holly. “Another worry for me was how were we going to make traveling to Mon Health work. I am a single parent, I work full time and I have nowhere to stay in Morgantown, but Mon Health came through.”

After staying in the hospital for a week, Zoe underwent treatment every Monday from August 7th to October 2nd.

“I am thankful for the nurses and to Dr. McBee at Mon Health for taking care of me and for supporting me during this tough time,” said Zoe. “I rang the bell for the last time on October 2nd. I was really excited to be putting that part of my life to the side.”

Zoe is looking forward to graduating high school in May of 2024. After that, she plans to go to cosmetology school to learn to do nails, lashes, and makeup.

“I could not have asked for better nurses and doctors to care for my daughter. Zoe was strong throughout this whole process, stronger than me, and the staff at Mon Health supported her the whole way,” said Holly.
