Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center offers among the region’s shortest wait times from mammogram to biopsy
Posted Date: 11/13/2025
At Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center, patients undergoing breast cancer screening benefit from one of the region’s fastest diagnostic turnaround times — with less than 10 days between an abnormal mammogram and a biopsy, helping ease anxiety and support early detection.
“Early detection saves lives, and timely follow-up is essential,” said Kathlene Jurczak, RN, OCN, Breast Health Nurse Navigator at Mon Medical Center. “When a mammogram indicates that additional imaging or a biopsy may be needed, we work hand in hand with radiologists and providers to ensure patients are scheduled quickly — typically within 10 days. That efficiency helps reduce the uncertainty and stress patients often feel while waiting for results.”
The Mon Medical Center team includes dedicated breast radiologists, oncology specialists and nurse navigators who guide patients through every step of the process, from screening to diagnosis and beyond.
Early detection remains the strongest predictor of successful outcomes.
“When breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is over 99 percent,” said Ihtishaam Qazi, MD, Medical Oncologist at Mon Health Cancer Center. “We’re seeing a growing number of cases in younger women, which makes it more important than ever for women of all ages to stay proactive about regular screenings. A simple mammogram can make the difference — it can truly save a life.”
For patients who require a biopsy, Mon Health’s nurse navigators provide individualized support and education to help ease concerns. Jurczak personally contacts each patient, explaining what to expect and remaining a consistent point of contact throughout the process.
“I let every patient know that I’m here for them,” Jurczak said. “Having someone who can answer questions and provide reassurance makes a big difference when facing uncertainty. We want every woman to feel supported, informed and cared for.”
Mon Health’s approach extends beyond diagnosis and treatment. Survivorship and support programs such as the Cancer Center’s Positivity, Balance, and Joy (PB&J) series, provide cancer survivors with social connection, emotional support and wellness activities.
“Support doesn’t stop when treatment ends,” said Tricia Julian, RN, BSN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator, Mon Health Cancer Center. “Our survivorship programs help patients maintain balance, find community and continue healing both physically and emotionally.”
