Vandalia Health expands access to specialized care for sexual assault survivors through SANE program

Posted Date: 4/16/2026

Vandalia Health is strengthening access to specialized, trauma-informed care for individuals affected by sexual assault through its Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, ensuring patients across the region can receive compassionate support and medical services when they need it most.

A SANE is a specially trained registered nurse who provides medical care, emotional support and, if the patient chooses, forensic evidence collection following a sexual assault. These nurses are equipped to deliver patient-centered care while helping individuals understand their options during a highly vulnerable time.

“SANEs are trained to meet patients where they are, providing care at their own pace and ensuring they feel safe, respected and supported,” said Alexis Burkel, BSN, RN, a SANE nurse at Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center. “The most important thing we do is treat people with compassion and help them make the choices that are right for them.”

Unlike common misconceptions, patients do not have to report an assault to law enforcement to receive care. Individuals can access medical treatment, speak with a trained nurse and receive support services regardless of whether they choose to pursue legal action.

The program emphasizes trauma-informed care, which focuses on minimizing re-traumatization while empowering patients to maintain control over their care decisions. Services may include treatment for injuries, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention options and connection to counseling and community resources.

“Having trained SANE professionals available locally can make a significant difference in whether someone feels comfortable seeking care,” said Brittany DeCrease, BSN, RN, SANE-A, statewide SANE coordinator with West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services. “These services ensure patients receive timely, compassionate care and understand that they are not alone.”

On-site SANE services are currently available at Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center in Morgantown and Vandalia Health Davis Medical Center in Elkins. Patients who present at other Vandalia Health locations can be safely transferred to receive specialized care, with transportation arranged to support both the patient and a trusted companion.

When a patient arrives for care, Vandalia Health teams prioritize privacy and safety. Patients are placed in a secure environment and guided through each step of their care, with the ability to accept or decline any part of the exam at any time.

Health care leaders emphasize that care is always available, regardless of when someone chooses to seek help. While earlier care can support evidence collection and treatment, patients can receive medical attention, support and resources at any time following an assault.

Vandalia Health encourages anyone in need of support — or those helping a loved one — to seek care and utilize available resources.

“The most important message is that you are not alone, and what happened is not your fault,” Burkel said. “There are trained professionals ready to support you whenever you are ready.”

For more information about SANE services or to access care, individuals can visit any Vandalia Health emergency department or contact their local rape crisis center for confidential support.
