MACI is a cartilage restoration procedure that utilizes a patient’s own cartilage cells to construct a graft that can be customized for their defect, as opposed to donor grafts. It is FDA approved for patients up to the age of 55 years old. The MACI procedure, which has not yet been widely performed in West Virginia, has been proven to allow patients to recover from damaged knee cartilage and return to an active lifestyle. Although this procedure allows for restoration of damaged cartilage, it is not intended to treat osteoarthritis.
