Mon Health Medical Center Awarded $493,000 from ARC to Support Appalachians Recovering from Substance Use Disorder
Posted Date: 9/12/2023
Mon Health Medical Center was awarded $493,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to support Mon Pathways to Success, an initiative started to empower positive systemic change by eliminating barriers and challenges preventing individuals from re-entering the workforce.
“At ARC, we know that substance use disorder recovery isn’t a singular event, but a continuum. Both workforce training and ending the stigma surrounding substance use disorder are equally important in providing a renewed sense of hope and purpose to Appalachians in recovery,” said ARC Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin. “INSPIRE grantees are doing the important work to remove all barriers to entry when it comes to recovery-to-work projects across the region, ensuring that all Appalachians have a chance at a bright future.”
Since INSPIRE was established in April 2021, ARC has invested nearly $42 million in 126 projects across 349 Appalachian counties. The nearly $14 million package for Fiscal Year 23 is projected to improve 2,178 businesses and prepare 9,772 individuals for new opportunities in the workforce.
“We are so appreciative of Co-Chair Gayle Manchin and ARC for its investment,” said David Goldberg, President and CEO of Mon Health System and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “This grant will support the development of jobs and lend a helping hand to those looking to enter the workforce through Mon Health facilities and services. Together we are moving Appalachia forward, one person at a time.”
Founded in February 2023, Mon Pathways to Success strives to provide a transparent, sustainable, and comprehensive program to empower individuals experiencing homelessness, recovery, or those who have difficulty re-entering the workforce. In addition to providing free transportation and a meal for program participants each shift, the delivery of monthly professional development workshops, career counseling, mentorship, and experiential education are available to encourage personal and career growth.
Individuals hired through Mon Pathways to Success will also have the opportunity to apply for funding to further their education after the first six months of employment. Because of ARC’s support, Mon Pathways to Success will provide extra financial assistance to help sustain employees long-term and provide educational career growth.
