Mon Health Medical Center is adding to its Obstetrics and Gynecology team with the addition of Brenda Hogan, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Brenda is a Registered Nurse who has worked in several roles including Unit Charge Nurse, Labor & Delivery Nurse, Leadership Preceptor, Childbirth Instructor, and Newborn Nursery Team Member.

Lactation Consultants are trained professionals who help parents find the way to breastfeed that works best for both mom and baby to increase the chances of success and overcome breastfeeding challenges. The Lactation Consultant can address issues like poor milk supply, breast pain, trouble latching, finding comfortable nursing positions, poor infant weight gain, and more.

“I’m excited to join the Mon Health team and help expand the reach of our Baby-Friendly facilities,” Brenda said. “Breastfeeding is my passion and it is so important to provide this support to the families of West Virginia.”

During Breastfeeding Awareness Month, Mon Health recognizes the many benefits of breastfeeding for moms and babies. Breastfeeding lowers the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), protects against respiratory and diarrheal disease, reduces ear infections, decreases the risk of childhood cancer, protects against allergies, protects babies’ gut from germs and diseases, and more. For breastfeeding parents, benefits can include lower risk of osteoporosis later in life, reduced risk of breast, uterine, endometrial, and ovarian cancer, and it releases hormones that helps the uterus shrink and prevents bleeding.
