Mon Health Cancer Center Now Providing Radiation Oncology

Posted Date: 5/16/2017
The Mon Health Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center is now providing radiation oncology services, allowing cancer patients to receive all their care and treatment on the Morgantown campus.

“Thousands of West Virginia cancer patients leave our state every year for treatment.  Mon Health’s radiation oncology services will go a long way toward helping us do better than that in West Virginia,” said Mon Health Radiation Oncologist Paul Saconn, MD.

The new $7-million radiation oncology unit includes a newly purchased linear accelerator, bringing the most advanced technology in radiation treatment to the community.  The first radiation oncology patient received treatment at the end of March.

The radiation unit is part of a 4,000 square foot expansion and renovation of the Mon Health Cancer Center, including separate medical and radiation oncology clinics, comfortable waiting areas, family consultation rooms and an easily accessible drive-up covered canopy. The department also added a state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner for diagnostic imaging and coordinated treatment planning.

“For decades Mon Health has been providing its patients with surgery and chemotherapy treatments. Adding this last component of radiation therapy, enables us be much more comprehensive in the treatments that we offer,” said Saconn.

To oversee radiation oncology services Mon Health added Saconn to its staff for a total of seven oncologists.

“We see over 600 cancer patients a year and we anticipate with the addition of the radiation oncology department, we will reach more patients in the community as we develop a reputation as a complete cancer center with the quality and excellence the community has come to know and expect from Mon Health,” said Dr. Saconn.
