Mon General offers new Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)™ procedure to diagnose and plan treatment for a lesion deep in the lung
Posted Date: 4/16/2013
Mon General recently began offering a new procedure called Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) that provides patients a minimally-invasive option to locate, enable biopsy and plan treatment for a lesion detected deep in the lung. The new endoscopic bronchoscope was purchased with proceeds from the Auxiliary of Mon General’s 2012 Ball of the Year. Pictured, left to right, are Mon General Chief Operating Officer Linda Ollis; Ghassan Kanj, MD, holding the bronchoscope; Auxiliary President Anne McKnight and Auxiliary Ball of the Year Committee Member Aimee Tallman.
Mon General Hospital is now offering a new procedure called Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) that provides patients a minimally-invasive option to locate, enable biopsy and plan treatment for a lesion (spot) detected deep in the lung.
Mon General is now providing the superDimension® i•Logic™ System as an option for patients who have learned they have a hard-to-reach lesion on their lung. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that uses the patient’s natural airways to access lesions that were previously hard to reach. Before, a patient with a spot on the lung typically had the options of major surgery to remove a section of the lung, bronchoscopy (which does not reach lesions deep in the lung), needle biopsy or watchful waiting.
The ENB procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting and its unique approach may increase the chances that a patient will safely get a diagnosis and begin treatment, if needed.
“We are pleased to offer a minimally-invasive alternative for patients who have a lesion on their lung that is hard to reach or cannot tolerate a more invasive procedure,” said Ghassan H. Kanj, MD, FCCP, a Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Medicine physician on the Mon General Hospital Medical Staff. “This is an option that will help many patients.”
The endoscopic bronchoscope used in the ENB procedure was purchased with proceeds from The Auxiliary of Mon General Hospital’s 2012 Ball of the Year. It will benefit the Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center of Mon General’s prevention and early detection program and will be a critical component in the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
