Local Business Owner Donates Handmade Pillows to the Mon Health Cancer Center
Posted Date: 9/4/2024
Danielle Martin, owner of local sewing business, Icelandic Ponies, recently made a donation of 20 handmade mastectomy pillows to the Mon Health Cancer Center in Morgantown.
Mastectomy pillows provide comfort and support for women following breast surgery. After learning of the need for these pillows at the Mon Health Cancer Center in Morgantown, Martin thought this would be a great way to give back to the community and serve people in need.
“I had a lot of community support for this project,” said Martin. “Many friends and followers donated money to go toward supplies for the pillows while I donated my time to make them.”
As a small business owner, Martin strives to create products that enhance people’s lives and decided to donate specifically to Mon Health’s Cancer Center because of the system’s similar mission.
“I appreciate Mon Health's mission statement ‘to the enhance the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time,’” said Martin. “This reflects the value structure for my clothing company, as I am committed to creating products that enhances people's lives. Profit is less of a concern to me than making a positive impact on my community.”
Martin’s handmade pillows will be given to patients who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer and have undergone a mastectomy, which is a surgical removal of one or both breasts. Breast cancer affects every 1 in 8 women in the United States and is the most common cancer among women in West Virginia. Studies show that screenings with 3D mammography breast cancer detection rates increase by nearly 40 percent. At Mon Health, all patients receive mammography results within 24 hours.
“I've watched both my partner and my mother survive cancer treatment, and I know it was the hardest thing they've ever gone through,” said Martin. “Cancer can be physically and emotionally draining. I want to make functional products that enhance people's lives and that bring them comfort during a difficult time. I hope that my pillows bring patients a little bit of joy and let them know that they are not alone, and that people care about them.”
Because of generous donations like these, the Mon Health Cancer Center is able to provide additional support to all patients undergoing treatment for cancer through the Wig Bank, Bra Bank, and more.
