Cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Alexander Nagy, recently performed the first Perceval Aortic Pericardial Heart Valve replacement at Mon Health Medical Center.

According to Dr. Nagy, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Mon Health Medical Center, this specific device enhances the surgical approach to an aortic valve replacement, designed for any patient, especially complex cases. Offering this procedure leads to less time spent in the operating room and a short recovery for patients. Patient’s experience improved outcomes that reduce post-operative complications.

The hospital’s first procedure was performed at the end of August on a Elizabeth Scarff from Jane Lew, WV.

“This is an advanced procedure offered here at Mon Health Medical Center,” he said. “Having the reduced time in the operation room greatly benefits the patient’s recovery time and a faster return to their normal, higher quality life.”

Offering a sutureless valve replacement means physicians aren’t spending time stitching the valve in place. Instead, the sutureless valve device creates the optimal seal within the aortic valve, according to Dr. Nagy.

“Being able to offer this alternative procedure to patients at Mon Health Medical Center is an achievement for our clinicians and their staff,” said David Goldberg, president and CEO of Mon Health. “Dr. Nagy and his team continue to provide high-quality, advanced treatments for heart patients.”
