On Saturday, May 20, The Village at Heritage Point retirement community celebrated resident Jean Teter’s 99th birthday.
Jean Teter is a West Virginia native and grew up in Westover. She graduated high school in 1942 and entered college that same year. Teter studied Medical Technology at West Virginia University (WVU) where her tuition was $40 per semester. At her white coat ceremony in 1947, Teter was recognized for her efforts for being the first out of three students to graduate with a Medical Technology degree from WVU. Teter was able to work in many different areas in her field and enjoyed every part of it. She planned the opening of one of the top laboratory centers in West Virginia and held a very high position there for many years. After a long and rewarding career, Teter retired in 1988.
“She is very proud of what she has done”, stated Sandy Teter, Jean’s daughter in law.
For her 99th birthday celebration, Teter got to spend time with many friends and family members who traveled from out of town to see her, such as her great nieces and nephew. She said she had lots of fun while they shared snacks and ice cream together. She opened many cards from her family, friends, and staff from The Village at Heritage Point.
“She has so many friends at The Village and participates in so many activities. Whether it is bingo, sing alongs, or traveling, she takes advantage of everything they offer. It is comforting to us as her family to know that she is staying at such a great place, because it is safe and the kindness of the staff is above anything else”, said Sandy.
Teter has two children with her late husband John, who unfortunately passed in 2011. Her and John also share three grandchildren and two great grandchildren together. Her and John moved into The Village at Heritage Point in 2008. Teter has mentioned how much she appreciates the mutual respect from the staff, and always talks about the excellent care she receives. The security guards and the maintenance men at the facility call her “Ms. Jean”, and give her a warm greeting whenever they see her. She is very thankful to all the services that are provided to her and her family.
