Mon General Foundation presents $61,000 in scholarships

Recipients of the 2014 Foundation of Mon General Hospital Health Career Scholarships.

            The Foundation of Mon General Hospital presented $61,000 in scholarships to 37 area students pursuing degrees in health care fields at its 24th Annual Health Career Scholarship Awards Program on Monday, May 5th.

            Six of the scholarships were worth $5,000 each for students pursing masters programs, while the other 31 scholarships were worth $1,000 each.The presentation took place in the Hazel Ruby McQuain Conference Center at Mon General.

            Three Rachel C. Piribek Scholarships were presented. Recipients include Carmen Study of Morgantown, a second-year recipient seeking a degree in Nursing from the West Virginia Junior College; Misty Vandergrift-Haught of Morgantown, a second-year recipient working on a Nursing degree at Alderson Broaddus University; and Yvonne Garcia of Fairmont, a first-year recipient studying at West Virginia University to be a Family Nurse Practitioner.

            Four George D. Hott Memorial Scholarships were presented. All four awardees are pursuing Nursing degrees.  Receiving these were Lacy Fisher of Morgantown, a third-year recipient attending West Virginia Junior College; Sarah Kennedy of Smithfield, PA, a third-year recipient attending WVU; Heidi Dunn of Morgantown, a first-year recipient planning to attend WVU; and Bruce Greeley of Smithfield, WV, a first-year recipient planning to attend Fairmont State University.

            Three John Mathew Gay Brown Family Foundation Scholarships were presented. Receiving these for the third year were Kelly Humphreys of Mannington, WV, who is seeking a Pharmacy degree at Fairmont State University, and Bethany Moore of Fairmont, also seeking a Pharmacy degree at WVU.  Alexandra Harvey of Ohiopyle, PA is a first-year recipient planning to study Nursing, and is undecided on her school at this time.

Two Edward and Norma Jean Skriner Scholarships were presented. Receiving these were second-year recipients Andrew Eddy of Mount Morris, PA and Jessica Ashcraft of Reader, WV.  Both are studying Pharmacy at WVU.

            Receiving the two Gail W. Cunningham Memorial Scholarships were Amber Pincavitch of Dilliner, PA, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree at Penn State University, and Matthew Griffin of Flemington, WV, a third-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from Alderson Broaddus University.  

Two Martha Phillips Hupp Scholarships were presented to first-year recipients Meagan Campbell of Clarksburg, who will attend WV Wesleyan, and Marlea Donaldson of Fairmont, who will attend Fairmont State University. Both plan to pursue Nursing degrees.

            The Glenn and Susan Adrian Scholarships went to Reuben Bland of Morgantown, a fourth-year recipient who is seeking a Nursing degree at WVU, and April Strahin of Independence, WV, a first-year recipient who plans to study Pharmacy at WVU.

            Three Wilma B. Nailler Memorial Scholarships were awarded.  Receiving the scholarships were Steven Sponaugle of Parsons, WV, a third-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from Davis & Elkins College; Jessi Conners of Clarksburg, a second-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from FSU; and Madelyn Harvey of Morgantown, a first-year recipient planning to attend WVU to study Pharmacy.

            Three John Michael Pritchard Memorial Scholarships were presented. The recipients were Amanda Davis of Salem, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree from West Virginia Wesleyan; Casey Batt of Morgantown, a second-year recipient studying Nursing at WVU; and first-year recipient Amber Trickett of Fairmont, who plans to attend FSU to study Nursing.

            Six Reta and Paul Gabriel Scholarships were presented. Each of these scholarships was for $5,000. Second-year recipients were Susan Konya of Fairmont, WV, who is seeking a Masters in Health Care Administration from the University of Phoenix, and Natasha Wamsley of Morgantown, who is seeking a Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Walden University. The four new recipients are Amanda Abel of Fairmont and Therese Wilson of Smithfield, PA, both of whom are pursuing MSN degrees at the California University of Pennsylvania; Sean Dill of Morgantown who is pursuing his EMBA at WVU; and Jamie McLaughlin of Morgantown who is attending Duquesne University pursuing an MSN.

            Eight Foundation of Mon General scholarships were awarded. These went to MiKayla Matheny of Core, WV, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree at Ohio State; Michelle Nestor of Morgantown, a fourth-year recipient studying to become a Radiologic Tech at Pierpont Community and Technical College; Elizabeth Perry of Morgantown, a fourth-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WVU; Katie Diamond of Smithfield, PA, a third-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree at Penn State; Logan Godfrey of Clarksburg, a second-year recipient seeking a Pharmacy degree from WV Wesleyan; Jacqueline Forrester of Morgantown, a second-year recipient seeking a Nursing degree at WV Junior College; and Danielle Dawson of Morgantown, a second-year recipient studying Nursing at WVU.

            Selection was based on the application, academic performance and financial need. Each applicant also submitted a letter describing why they selected a specific health career.

            The Foundation created the Health Career Scholarship program in 1991 to promote health care careers in fields with projected worker shortages in the Morgantown area. A sub-committee of the Board of Directors of The Foundation selected the recipients.
