Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center becomes first in the region to establish dual single port flip room

Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center has achieved a regional first with the creation of a Single Port (SP) flip room — a special type of operating room that uses two robotic surgery systems to allow surgical teams to transition seamlessly between rooms, maximizing efficiency and increasing access to advanced robotic surgery.

Each robotic system enables surgeons to perform complex procedures through a single, small incision, using advanced robotic instruments and 3D visualization. By introducing a flip room model between two SP platforms, Mon Medical Center is pioneering a new level of surgical efficiency and patient-centered care in the region.

“In our rural state of West Virginia, access to quality health care sometimes is a challenge,” said Urologist Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, DO, FACOS, Medical Director of Robotic Surgery, Medical Director of Medical Specialties and Master Robotic Surgeon. “For us, it's very important to provide the same high level quality care to each patient. By leveraging this advanced technology, we are able to care for more patients and be closer to home.”

More than ten surgical staff members completed specialized training in the dual system configuration to prepare for the launch. The hands-on sessions covered fundamentals, troubleshooting and best practices to ensure the success of the first scheduled cases.
