Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital earns geriatric emergency department accreditation
Posted Date: 6/15/2026

Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital
has earned accreditation as a Geriatric Emergency Department (GED) from the
American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), recognizing the hospital’s
commitment to providing specialized, age-friendly emergency care for older adults.
The
accreditation recognizes emergency departments that have implemented best practices,
policies and procedures designed to enhance care for patients age 65 and older.
The GED accreditation program promotes quality emergency care tailored to the unique
needs of older adults, including standardized approaches to common geriatric
conditions, improved care transitions and enhanced patient outcomes.
Mon Preston Memorial Hospital joins Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center as an
accredited Geriatric Emergency Department and is among a growing network of
accredited emergency departments nationwide delivering senior-focused emergency
care through evidence-based practices and interdisciplinary collaboration.
“Earning Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation reflects our commitment to
providing exceptional care for patients of all ages, particularly our growing senior
population,” said Melissa Lockwood, Chief Administrative Officer of Vandalia Health Mon
Preston Memorial Hospital. “This recognition demonstrates the dedication of our
emergency department team to ensuring older adults receive compassionate, quality
care that addresses their unique healthcare needs.”
To achieve accreditation, Mon Preston Memorial Hospital implemented geriatric-focused
protocols and processes designed to identify and address the specific needs of older
adults, including fall prevention, medication management, cognitive assessment and
coordination of care following discharge. These efforts help ensure patients receive the
right care at the right time while supporting safe transitions to home or other care
settings.
“Older adults often present with complex medical conditions that require a specialized
approach to emergency care,” said David Gidley, RN, BSN, Emergency Department
Nurse Manager, Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital. “This accreditation
validates the work our team has done to create an environment and care processes that
better serve senior patients and help improve their outcomes and overall experience.”
The accreditation follows another recent milestone for Mon Preston Memorial Hospital’s
emergency department. Earlier this year, the hospital earned the Always Ready for Kids
(ARK) designation for providing quality emergency care for children. Together, the ARK
designation and Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation reflect the hospital’s
dedication to delivering specialized, age-appropriate care for patients across the
lifespan, from children to older adults.
