Inpatient Diabetes Care
Mon Health Medical Center provides Inpatient Diabetes Education to patients in the hospital, when requested by a healthcare provider. The education session takes up to an hour, depending on your needs.
It is best if your provider requests this service early in your hospital stay, giving you time to process the information and to ask any questions you may have before leaving the hospital. If diabetes education isn’t requested until your discharge, we may not be able to see you, but someone will call you at home to discuss your needs.
Some topics covered in our inpatient diabetes education include:
- What it means to have diabetes
- What complications can occur, and how you can avoid them
- Current treatment recommendations from the American Diabetes Association
- Instruction in using insulin
- Instruction in using a glucose meter
- How to properly dispose of syringes and other “sharps”
- How your diabetes may be affected when you are sick, and how to manage it
- Why it’s important to maintain consistent eating habits
- Signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and
treatment for each
- Why and how physical activity can help manage diabetes
- Caring for your feet
As part of your education, we will provide you with resources to help at home, including:
- Glucose meter and starter supplies
- Insulin pen needle starter kit
- Insulin supplies case kit with DVD
- Insulin syringe starter kit
